Quilts by me

Here I'm sharing some of the quilts I have made.  As you may tell, I don't really follow a pattern.  What I love to do is source ideas from craft magazines and vintage books and apply them randomly.  I mostly just play around with fabric and start sewing patches together to get a design --- then I lay them out on the floor and re-arrange.  It's thoroughly enjoyable and the designing of the quilt top is the most fun. I must admit, I dislike basting, especially since there's such limited floor space in my little Unit and I usually have to clear out lots of little toys to have enough room.  But once the basting is done, the sense of satisfaction is immense because then I can quilt the sandwich together and I can, once again, be creative.   I love to make quilts for my family and friends, because after all, how many can I have and store? At least, I know I'm creating for a purpose which gives me immense satisfaction.  I think 'crafting', in general, is a most satisfying way to spend one's time -- it seems to slow life down and allows for reflection, creativity and inspiration.

******************************************************************I love fairy or faery-folk and their various images depicted by different artists:  Cicely Mary Barker, Brian Froud, Shirley Barber (to name only a few). They have very different styles but they all stir my imagination and 'call to me'. This quilt was made for Lucia, my daughter, and I used Cicely Mary Barker's fabric panels depicting her well-known Flower Fairies.

This was a quick applique baby cot quilt made for a newborn -- it could be used as a 'blankie' or a floor play-mat.  It was one of the first quilts I made. I fussy-cut images of animals from another fabric to add to a plain purple background. I think it worked well and was completed within 2 days (which was before I had two children of my own!).

This quilt was made for my niece Annalissa for Christmas. I used the applique technique to create hearts in the borders of this quilt. I love the use of purples, oranges and red which is broken up with white or pale yellow. It's probably my favourite colour-blend --- that is, orange, purple, red tones --- but then again, I change with each fresh fabric inspiration!

This quilt was made using the Paddington Bear story-book panels - obviously I just used the panels for a bed quilt rather than for a softie-book for a child.  I think it turned out well --- and was designed with the notion that the child would 'grow' into it with the bright use of fabric, and the number panels.  Well, I know the mum loved the quilt, the baby had no noticeable positive reaction to it. :-)

This quilt was made for my niece for Christmas. Her family was off to England, leaving sunny Sydney for a few years, so I thought a quilt would be a perfect farewell/Christmas gift. After all, it snows in England at Christmas time - which is a total novel idea for me -- and I imagined her snuggling up in bed whilst reading a great book (she loves to read!). Can you just imagine how many quilts I would make if I lived in a cooler climate? It's mind-boggling and I'm sure I'll get carpel tunnel syndrome from the excess process!!!!!!

  1. My girls Annalissa and Bella love their quilts. It always brightens their rooms, no matter how gloomy it is outside.

  2. Hey I love your cute blog. While I don't make quilts, I do like to crochet. I was just wondering do you have a tumblr? I simply find it easier to navigate and follow people there than this website. Cheers!
